Citation Analysis

Here's a list of how often my papers have been cited, as of July 2001-2008, (cf April 2000, Jan 1999), taken from ISI. I've done some corrections due to mistyped year/page numbers (post 1998 only). Corrections can be important -- my 2008 PRL is recorded as having 9 citations according to WoS's article record, but a search for citations of ``Kinsler 2008'' reveal a further three. The time intervals started at about 15 months, but until I work out how to get the citation engine to give me the situation at some historical date I can't do anything about it. Author names preceeded by an underscore are for papers where I was not first or second author.

In addition, some of my work has been included in C.W. Gardiner's "Quantum Noise", (Springer, Berlin, 1991); Walls and Milburn's "Quantum Optics", (Springer, Berlin, 1995); and more recently Paul Harrison's "Quantum Wells, Wires, and Dots", (Springer, 2000).

NOTE: Some analysis of citation statistics has been done by S. Lehmann, B. Lautrup, and A. D. Jackson in arXiv.org/abs/physics/0211010 based on the (high energy physics) SPIRES database. They see a threshold in the frequency of paper citations: the likelihood of getting over 50 citations drops off faster than for between 1-50. How this result applies to other fields (such as mine) is an open question.

NOTE: The "h-index" was recently proposed by Hirsch in physics/0508025. In July 2010 I had an h-index of 12; although I am now rather sceptical that h-indices mean very much except perhaps as a post-career indication of how sucessfully you jumped on every nearby research bandwagon.

They are grouped according to area, which, in order, are (roughly):

My PhD, mostly on the quantum theory of the parametric oscillator. These are still attracting a reasonable trickle of citations.
Postdoc at Sheffield, on semiconductor microstructures. The big success here is the motional narrowing PRL with David Whittaker as first author.
Postdoc at Leeds, on carrier dynamics in quantum well lasers. These have been going quite well, and in fact outperform my PhD work for comparable time delays. I'm a bit disappointed that the 2001 JAP hasn't picked up more citations, but as it was completed some time after I left, was not promoted at conferences.
Postdoc at Delft, on hot-hole lasers. Despite being positioned on the THz bandwagon, the specific subject area got sidelined and quantum cascade lasers arrived as the new miracle solution, leaving hot-hole lasers looking like a curiosity. Given the years of (pc) cpu time spent reducing the statistical errors in the Monte Carlo simulations, it is frustrating that the 2003 JAP seems to have made no impact at all, despite being the first (TMK) confirmation of the applicability of standard impurity models in SiGe -- again, though, this suffered from unavoidable lack of promotion.
Postdocs at Imperial, on short-pulse nonlinear optics and then metamaterials. It's a bit early to say much here, although the first paper (PRA 2003) is doing well, as is some of the Raman work I did with the Laser Consortium.

Note 1: 
The 2002 JAP paper seems to have achieved the remarkable feat of being cited
before publication.  This is because it took some time to get published, 
and I have counted it's "unpublished" citations in the total, as described
in the Fixes.

Note 2: 
I suspect some of the 2009+ counts were boosted 
 beyond those from new citations by additions to the database post 2008.
E.g., the Fisher et al 1996 NATOASI paper only appeared
 as a result in 2009; I had not seen it before.

Back in September 1998 I did more analysis, partly to try to filter out distortion from self-citations. For papers on which I was first author, there were 62 citations, from a total of 40 articles, of which 10 articles included me as an author. Of the 30 other articles that cited my papers, the most commonly cited authors (top 11) were:

56 = DRUMMOND_PD;
45 = KINSLER_P;
34 = GARDINER_CW;
15-20 = CARMICHAEL_HJ, COLLETT_MJ, GRAHAM_R, HILLERY_M YURKE_B, AGARWAL_GS, REID_MD, WOLINSKY_M.

Again in those 30 articles, the most frequently cited articles were:

If you analyse all 40 articles, the cited-author ranking is pretty much the same, but there are more DRUMMOND_PD articles in the most frequently cited list. I am not sure what all this means, but compiling it kept me amused for half an hour.
